About the event
This exhibition uses the history and energy of a former Black-owned grocery store as a conceptual frame, while keeping the artistic theme rooted in African American culture, storytelling, and expression. The show does not recreate or imitate a grocery store. Instead, it draws on the metaphor of “shopping” to guide the audience’s emotional and cultural journey through space. The exhibition will explore a blend of African American cultural experiences, highlighting the richness and diversity of the community. Themes include history, identity, music, fashion, hair and beauty, spirituality, activism, everyday life, joy, and community. By weaving together these elements, the exhibition creates a multi-layered narrative that reflects the complexity, resilience, and vibrancy of Black culture. Visitors are invited to engage with these stories through various artistic mediums and interactive installations, allowing for a personal and immersive experience.
